dima zorkov is a berlin based photographer. his goal is to achieve vintage cinematic atmosphere through hand made photographs using original equipment of the era at every stage of the process.
zorkov was born in minsk, belarus in 1977. during the early years of his life he had a chance to catch a glimpse of late soviet regime of 80’s. zorkov started taking pictures at the age of 14 after receiving a rangefinder zorki 4 from his father. he was hooked immediately and shot many photographs of school mates. zorkov kept his photography passion private so it wasn’t a great deal for the outside world. after moving to london in 2001 there was a digital period of creative collaboration with musicians in conjunction with live performances. in early 2006 zorkov become interested in analog 35mm medium once again and soon after participated in his first group exhibition in russia. it wasn’t until 2011 when he set up his own darkroom, moving one step forward to what was only a dream or perhaps an idea. being ‘out there’ in the right place and time is a key element to a composition. the result of street hunting is processed paying utmost attention to mixes and timings. every image is thoroughly selected and hand printed on high quality paper, using analogue equipment by artist himself. zorkov experiments with various grades of paper and uses manual shading techniques. his photographs are spontaneous street shots partly involving people he knows. since may 2016 zorkov resides in berlin.
